The growing need to preserve our cultural heritage is causing a rise in the demand for increasingly accurate cleaning techniques, featuring high selectivity and low impact.

Laser has proven more effective in removing oxidation and film from gilded bronze surfaces. Using suitably devised laser systems, here we can operate with significant safety and efficacy. Also in the instance of especially delicate surfaces, such as ancient silver coins, or silver-gilded coins, good cleaning results have been obtained taking advantage of the high reflecting power of silver that prevents the local build-up of heat and therefore the chance of damaging the original surface.

Recent studies have also shown the possibility to operate directly on bronze and copper surfaces, preserving both the original films and the workmanship details. In the special instance of iron works, the local heat treatment has caused the conversion of the level of hydrated oxide into anhydrous oxide, therefore making the surface more resistant and slowing down possible decay.
